Word lists are practice. Real pages are the test.
Typing sites give you lowercase words with no punctuation. What you actually type every day has capitals, commas, quotes and numbers. Typinground lets you practice on that.
Typing sites
Open a new tab, wait for it to load, type random common words.
Typinground
Stay on the page you're reading. Press a shortcut, type what's in front of you.
Three seconds from reading to typing.
Open anything worth reading
A Wikipedia article, a blog post, a newsletter, the docs you already have open.
Press the shortcut
The rest of the page dims and a caret appears at the first paragraph on your screen.
Type, then check your score
The page scrolls with you. When time's up you get WPM, accuracy and a speed chart.
Small extension, every detail handled.
Types right on the page
Letters change color in place as you type, using the browser's highlight API. The page's own code is never rewritten, so nothing breaks, and pressing Esc leaves it exactly as it was.
Time or words
Race the clock or finish a fixed number of words.
Finds the real content
Skips menus, sidebars, footnotes and link lists, and starts at the first paragraph you can see.
Pick any section
Wrong part of the page? Hover, press ↑ to widen, click. Remembered for that site.
Results and history
WPM, accuracy, raw speed, a per-second chart, and personal bests.
Only keys you actually have
Curly quotes, long dashes and accented letters become plain keys. Words you can't type, like pronunciation guides, are skipped. Turn on simple mode for lowercase with no punctuation, so scores compare with typing sites.
/ˈtjʊərɪŋ/ → skipped [12] → skipped
Works without text, too
On a page with nothing to read, you get a quick common-words test instead, so the shortcut always does something.
Keyboard first, of course.
Shortcut already used by another extension? Change it at chrome://extensions/shortcuts, or use the link in the Typinground popup.

Questions, answered.
What is Typinground?
Typinground is a free browser extension for Chrome and Firefox that turns any webpage into a typing test. Press Alt+Shift+T on an article and its text becomes the test: you type over the page itself and get your words per minute (WPM), accuracy and a speed chart when you finish.
How do I take a typing test on any webpage?
Install Typinground, open any article, and press Alt+Shift+T. The rest of the page dims and a caret appears at the first paragraph on your screen. Type the text, then read your WPM and accuracy on the results card. Press Tab for a new test or Esc to exit.
Is Typinground free?
Yes. Typinground is free, with no account, no subscription and no ads.
Which browsers does Typinground support?
Chrome and other Chromium browsers such as Edge and Brave, plus Firefox.
Does it work on every website?
On almost any page with readable text. Browsers don't allow extensions on internal pages like chrome:// or the extension store, or inside the built-in PDF viewer. On a page without much text, you get a common-words test instead.
Why are my scores lower than on typing sites?
Real writing is harder: capitals, punctuation, numbers and longer words. Turn on simple mode (lowercase, no punctuation) when you want numbers you can compare.
Will it break the page I'm on?
No. Colors are drawn with the CSS Highlight API and the controls live in their own shadow root, so the page's code and styles are never changed. Press Esc and everything is gone.
It picked the wrong part of the page. What now?
Press Alt+Shift+P, hover over the part you want, press ↑ to widen the selection, and click. Typinground remembers it for that site, and you can clear saved sections from the popup.
Is any of my data sent anywhere?
No. There's no account and no server. Results, settings and saved sections are stored locally by your browser.
The shortcut doesn't do anything.
Your browser skips a default shortcut when another extension already uses it. Open the Typinground popup and click "change shortcuts", or go to chrome://extensions/shortcuts. Tabs that were open before you installed need a refresh.
Your next article is a warm-up.
Turn the reading you already do into daily typing practice.
